Sunbirds Walk Off to Take Series Opener against Western Oregon

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team improved to 3-1 at their home facility on Thursday night, defeating Western Oregon on a walk-off fielder's choice by a final of 4-3. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Garrett Cooper started the scoring with a sac fly in the home third, and Andrue Lackey picked up a two-out single to push the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. 
  • The Wolves plated their first run of the series in the top of the eighth before pulling even in the ninth inning. 
  • Haden Haynes walked to start the bottom of the ninth for the 'Birds, with Ben Coito coming on as a pinch runner representing the winning run. 
  • Jack Foote and Michael Warkentin each drew a walk to load the bases, bringing Cooper to the plate with just one away. 
  • Cooper bounced a ball up the middle but a slide under a high throw at first gave the Sunbirds their first walkoff of the season. 
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • Warkentin gave FPU three hits from the top of the order, while Cooper and Lackey were each credited with two RBI. 
  • Nic Boatman went five innings in his first start of the season, scattering four hits while fanning four in a strong outing. 
  • Michael Barker followed with 3.1 for the Blue and Orange, striking out six and delivering 66 pitches. 
  • Southpaw Tyler Rumbaugh was hit the blown save but earned the win after Cooper's final at-bat. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Cooper and Lackey have each reach base safely in all seven games so far this season.   
  • The Sunbirds have totaled 21 runs in series openers in 2020.
