Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

‘Birds Keep Rolling, Earn 4-1 Win in PacWest Opener

FRESNO, Calif. –  Two days after a 7-0 victory over UC Santa Cruz, the Fresno Pacific men's soccer team picked up a 4-1 win over Academy of Art to begin PacWest Conference action. The Sunbirds are unbeaten through four games since the 2008 season, when they opened with six straight wins. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Sunbirds maintained an attack-minded offense, striking in the 13thminute for an early lead. 
• ART U found the equalizer four minutes later, but the Blue and Orange went ahead again for good in the 28th minute. 
• Fresno Pacific added another score before the half to push the lead to 3-1, and a final goal in the game's 70th minute helped seal the deal. 
 
SCORING:
• (12:32) Team assist leader Anthony Velarde struck again, finding Joao Ravasio in the box, who then connected with Jose Vargas on a quick flick for an easy header.   
• (16:12) Andrew Deans passed inside the box to the right foot of Adrian Cekala, who turned on fired to the lower right to tie the game.  
• (28:21) Vargas was once again on the receiving end of an impressive pass, as Bruno Brumati made a quick dribble before dishing off to Vargas for his second score of the game.   
• (37:25) Brian Leyva stole the ball in traffic and came away with the goal after a breakdown in the Urban Knight back line. 
• (69:29) Sergio Bermudez dribbled into the box before dropping off to Ravasio, who responded with his first goal of the season with a chip over the keeper.  
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
The Sunbirds outshot their hosts 28-7, including a 10-3 mark in shots on frame. 
Patrick Timmer needed just two saves to pick up the win, while ART U's Kris Jennson racked up six saves. 
• FPU took eight of the game's nine corner kicks. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
Prior to Cekala's equalizer, Timmer played 186 minutes between the pipes this fall without surrendering a goal. 
• Fresno Pacific has outscored opponents 15-4 over its' first four games.
