SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –  The Fresno Pacific track and field teams competed at the 36th annual Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational on Saturday, as the Sunbirds continued to deliver impressive performances on the track and field.
Â
"Our team as a whole continues to believe more and more in who they are collectively, and what is possible," said head coach
Ray Winter. "That was evidenced today with so many season and lifetime bests. Our women's sprint squad had a very special day in spite of a bit of wind. We had many nationally-ranked marks and changes to our school record books, and it is exciting for everyone as a whole. Today was a tremendous catapult sending us up to the Bay Area next week for a big meet."
Â
There were many impressive highlights on the day for the women's and men's track and field programs at the invite, but
Brie Courseault's improvement on her own school record in the 400m dash, as well as the women's 4x400-meter relay, were the most significant.
Â
"I can't say enough about Brie -- her success really comes down to the correlation between disciplined work and a commitment to excellence in all facets of the student-athlete's life. She earns, and deserves, every accolade she gets," said Winter.
Â
The young relay team of Courseault,
Danae Manibog,
Cathrin Wicke and
Kyra Bailey took down the FPU record by over two seconds, winning the invitational's final event. Their time of 3:45.82 is one of the top marks in the nation and also a B-standard for nationals. Courseault's solo effort in the 400-meter dash was also significant, dropping to 55.75 from 56.04 and registering a national B-standard.Â
Â
Wicke also had a tremendous day in the 400m hurdles, lowering her best to 1:01.16. It marked a national-B standard and one of the top times in the nation, as well as being the second fastest time ever run by a Sunbird. It also produced a meet record for Wicke, besting a mark set in 2003 (1:01.53).
Â
Sprinter
Kala McClain had a double PR, running a slightly wind-aided 12.07 in the 100m, which is the second fastest ever in any conditions. McClain went on to run a lifetime best in the 200m in 25.10 to move to third all-time for the 'Birds.
Â
Manibog also ran strongly for the women in the 200m dash, running a season PR of 25.28 and earning a fifth all-time mark for the sunbirds. Likewise, Bailey ran a season PR of 25.66 to move into eighth all time in the 200m.
Â
On the field,
Annie Regier continued to improve on her outdoor campaign in the high jump, clearing a B-standard 1.67m (5'5.75").
Faith Jensen also had a lifetime best in the triple jump, stretching to a 11.32m (37'1.5") mark.Â
Â
The men were also outstanding on the day. Their 4x400m relay also closed out the meet in victory, with the team of
Armon Plummer,
Lawrence Cairo Jr.,
Danny Guerrero and
Michael Taylor winning in 3:17.30.
Â
Senior
Josh Zavala continued to lower his season best in the 800m, just missing getting under the two-minute mark (2:00.66).Â
Â
The pole vault crew had a solid day, led by
Andrew Morin's clearance of 4.57m.
Chris Orange (4.42m) and
Norman Napolitano (4.42m) also impressed for the Sunbirds. Â Â
Â
Â
Julian Gonzalez whipped a personal best of 149'7.25" in the javelin for the second straight week, while
Jaeden Herms finished well in the high jump at 1.88m on the field.
Â
FPU will now send a split squad to Stanford and San Francisco State on March 30-31.
