FPU Splits Final Day of the Lancer Joust

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team wrapped up the Lancer Joust on Saturday, as the Sunbirds split action at the Lancer Aquatics Center. FPU fell in the opener to #24 California Baptist, 12-7, before taking down Concordia, 11-6, in the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
• The Sunbirds and the Lancers went back and forth in the opening half. FPU scored the final two goals of the half to cut the deficit to 6-5.
• The difference in the game came in the third period, as the Lancers used a 4-1 quarter to take control of the game and eventually earn the win.
 
Game Two
• After falling behind early in game two, FPU used a strong second half to cruise to a win against Concordia.
• The Sunbirds led 5-4 at the intermission before outscoring the Eagles 6-2 in the final two periods. FPU used a 5-0 run to open the third quarter, as five different Sunbirds found the back of the cage during the stretch.
 
STATS:
Game One
• Julia Ponce led the 'Birds with three goals in the setback to CBU. Emily Knowles, Hannah Holly, Sam Witt and Katie Kisling rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece for FPU.
• CBU out-shot FPU 25-18 on the day and also converted 4-of-7 power-play opportunities.
 
Game Two
• Witt led the 'Birds four goals in the win over CUI, while Ponce added two goals and an assist and Knowles scored twice. Emma McBride, Holly and Nonie-Ann Grant scored one goal apiece as well. Madeline Frey headed the defense with nine saves in the cage.
• FPU held an impressive .500 shooting percentage in the win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX
• Head coach Bryan Suhovy now has 99 career wins on the women's side.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Sunbirds now head to the LMU Invitational to play four games. FPU opens the invite against San Jose State on Friday, March 16 at 11:45 a.m.
