Home Opener Highlights Three-Game Week for Men’s Hoops

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team hosts its home opener on Wednesday before traveling to the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in Sonoma on Friday and Saturday.

ABOUT THE SUNBIRDS
• FPU will look to get in the win column for the first time this season on Wednesday. The Sunbirds opened the season at the West Region Crossover Classic in Oregon, where they fell to Saint Martin's and Western Oregon.
Sam Burt had a big opening week for the 'Birds, as the senior averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting .650 from the floor. He totaled a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds against SMU.
Toby Christensen is adding 13.5 points per night on .750 shooting, while freshman Adrian Antunez is averaging 11.5 points and 3.5 steals per game.
 
AWESOME ANTUNEZ
Adrian Antunez was recently named the PacWest Freshman of the Week (11/13). Antunez, a product of Clovis West High School, started both games for FPU at the West Region Crossover Classic. In his collegiate debut, Antunez scored 13 points and grabbed five steals against St. Martin's. He then added 10 points, four rebounds and two steals in a setback to Western Oregon. His total of seven steals led the PacWest for the first week of the season. His weekly averages totaled 11.5 points and 3.5 steals per game while playing 28 minutes per night.
 
PACWEST PRESEASON POLL
• The Sunbirds were picked to finish 11th in the 2017-18 Pacific West Conference standings according to a poll of the league's head coaches. California Baptist received 178 points and 10 first-place votes to top the poll. Dixie State was second with 169 points and two first-place votes. Following the two were Point Loma and Concordia in third and fourth, respectively. The Sea Lions garnered 161 points and two first-place votes, while the Eagles amassed 154 points. Rounding out the poll was Azusa Pacific (142 points), Chaminade (132), Hawai'i Pacific (121), Dominican (94), Biola (79), Hawai'i Hilo (72), FPU (63), Holy Names (43), Academy of Art (37) and Notre Dame de Namur (25).

ABOUT THE PIONEERS
• Pacific Union, a member of the NAIA, enters at 1-1 overall. The Pioneers opened the year with a setback to Stanislaus State before defeating Westcliff (103-72) on Nov. 8.
• The Pioneers are averaging nearly 84 points per night and have five players averaging double-figures. Jayson Marquez leads the team with a scoring average of 16.5, while Jeremiah Blandin pulls down 11.0 rebounds per night.
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The Sunbirds and Pioneers will be meeting for the third time, with FPU holding a 2-0 all-time series advantage. The last meeting came in 2011, as the 'Birds earned an 89-82 victory at PUC.
 
ABOUT THE SEAWOLVES
• Sonoma State currently sits at 1-1 overall in the young season. The Seawolves defeated Seattle Pacific, 100-93, in double overtime before falling to Montana State Billings, 67-61, at the Pioneer Challenge.
• The Seawolves are currently averaging 80.5 points per night. Armani Nicolis leads the team with a 22.5 scoring average, as the junior is shooting .548 from the field and .500 from three. Jordan Hickman is adding 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per night.
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The two teams will be meeting for the 28th time, with the Sunbirds holding a 14-13 all-time series advantage over the Seawolves. The last meeting came during the 2013-14 season, with FPU winning 68-65.
 
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS
• Minnesota State, a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, enters the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at 1-1 overall. The Mavericks fell in their season opener to Pittsburg State, 90-80, before beating Missouri Southern State, 91-89, in overtime at the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge.
• MSU is currently averaging 85.5 points per game and sports four players averaging double-digits. Kevin Krieger is scoring 18.5 points per night to lead the team, while Charlie Brown is adding 17.0 ppg.
