SAN DIEGO – The Fresno Pacific baseball team saw its 2016 season come to an end on Tuesday, as the Sunbirds dropped a pair of games to Point Loma at Carroll B. Land Stadium. FPU fell by scores of 6-5 and 6-3 to suffer a PacWest series sweep.
Â
The Sunbirds conclude the year at 20-29 overall and 15-20 in the PacWest, good for a seventh-place finish. PLNU moves to 32-16 overall and 21-13 in league action (fourth) and now awaits its fate for postseason play when the NCAA West region rankings are released next week.
Â
FPU rallied in the opener to score four times in the top of the ninth on five-straight hits to tie the game 5-5. The momentum was short lived, however, as the Sea Lions walked off winners after a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
Â
Nick Pate led the Sunbirds with two hits and two RBI, while
Hunter Villanueva added two RBI on one hit.
Joey Gallegos knocked in a run as well.
Â
Rickie Garcia started for FPU and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. He allowed two earned runs (four total) in 5.1 innings of work and struck out two. Pate was tagged with the loss in relief.
Â
Kevin Lillicrop was sharp for PLNU on the mound, throwing 7.0 innings with six strikeouts. Kellen Sheppard led the offense with two hits and two RBI.
Â
In the nightcap, the Sunbirds held a 3-1 lead before the Sea Lions scored four times in the fifth inning. PLNU would add another run in the sixth and held the Sunbirds scoreless the final two frames to earn the sweep.
Â
Preston Scott homered in his final game as a Sunbird and finished 1-for-3. Gallegos added two runs and
Connor Wendorff totaled a hit and an RBI.
Josh Acosta took the loss for FPU.
Â
Ryan Garcia and Mike Gordner added two hits and an RBI apiece for the Sea Lions.
Â
FPU graduates a 2016 senior class of
Davy Vartanian,
Zac Smit,
Jake Martinez,
Kellen Hackett,
Tyler Sturgill,
Josh Medeles,
Kyle Rasmussen, Pate,
Kevin Magill and Scott. The group helped make up the core of last year's World Series team and were part of one of the winningest senior classes in program history. The Sunbirds do return a solid young core that they will look to build around.
