Fresno Pacific honored 10 seniors on Friday as the Sunbirds played in their final home game, falling 8-3 to #6 California Baptist. The 2016 senior class of
Davy Vartanian,
Zac Smit,
Jake Martinez,
Kellen Hackett,
Tyler Sturgill,
Josh Medeles,
Kyle Rasmussen,
Nick Pate,
Kevin Magill and
Preston Scott helped make up the core of last year's World Series team and were part of one of the winningest senior classes in program history.
The region's top-ranked Lancers spoiled the day by scoring three in the first and taking a 5-0 lead by the third inning. FPU starter
Josh Acosta would eventually settle down and get through five innings. The Sunbirds got two back in the bottom of the fifth as Scott delivered an RBI single and Pate followed with an RBI groundout that scored
Leo Carrillo.
The Lancers got the three runs right back in the sixth on a three-run home run to center by Stephen Lohr. Carrillo nearly made a great catch at the wall but the ball bounced off the top of his glove and went over the fence for a homer. Hackett, Rasmussen, Magill and Sturgill provided quality work out of the bullpen on their senior days to close out the final four frames.
Carrillo finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Pate went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including an RBI double in the seventh that made it 8-3.
Jeremy McDonald picked up the win for CBU to improve to 6-0. The Lancers improved to 37-9, 27-5 in PacWest play.
FPU dropped to 20-25, 15-16 in PacWest play.
The Sunbirds conclude the season with a road series at Point Loma in San Diego.
