FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific picked up its sixth straight win on Monday, as the Sunbirds swept Hawaii Pacific in a PacWest doubleheader at FPU Diamond. The Sunbirds slugged their way to a 7-4 win in the opener before
Davy Vartanian tossed a quality start in the nightcap to earn a 5-2 victory.

The Sunbirds move to 19-20 overall and 14-11 in league action with the two wins. HPU, which entered ranked eighth in the West Region, falls to 26-14 overall and 16-12 in the PacWest.

FPU totaled 12 hits in the opener and struck first in the opening frame, as
Leo Carrillo picked up a single from the leadoff spot and later scored on a sac fly from
Nick Pate. The Sunbirds went on to lead 7-0 before the Sharks managed four runs in the eighth.

Carrillo finished 2-for-4, which increased his hitting streak to 16 games, and scored two runs scored. Pate added three hits and two RBI,
Joey Gallegos totaled two hits and two RBI and
Preston Scott was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Jake Martinez delivered a quality start on the mound for FPU, throwing 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts. He pitched into the eighth before HPU got to him for three runs in the frame. Pate closed out the win for the Sunbirds.

HPU starter Rico Garcia took the loss in 4.0 innings of work, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. Nolan Barraza finished 3-for-4 for the Sharks.

FPU completed the day sweep of Hawaii Pacific after scoring in the opening four frames. The Sunbirds trailed 2-0 after the top half of the first, but responded with five unanswered runs to earn the win.

Vartanian picked up his second win of the year after firing 6.0 innings of two-run ball. He struck out seven. Pate picked up his second save of the day to move his season total to five.

Tristen Alvarez led the offense with two RBI, while Gallegos finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Carrillo extended his hitting streak to 17 games with two hits.

HPU's Kyle Detwiler took the complete-game loss, allowing five earned runs with three strikeouts.

The two teams wrap-up the four-game conference series with a doubleheader on Tuesday at FPU Diamond. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
