Sunbirds Sink Eagles, 13-3, in GCC Play

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific surpassed last season's win total with a 13-3 victory over Concordia on Saturday at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center. FPU used a balanced scoring attack in the win, as 11 different Sunbirds managed to find the back of the cage on the afternoon.

FPU improves to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the GCC with the victory. It marks the first-ever victory in conference play for the Sunbirds. CUI falls to 0-11 and 0-2 in league play.

FPU led from start-to-finish and opened the game with five straight scores to take control of the match. Emily Marr ignited the run with two consecutive goals in the opening minutes of action. The Sunbirds led 9-1 at the intermission and finished off the win with four goals in the second half.

Marr and Nonie Grant led the Sunbirds with two goals apiece. Julia Ponce, Kaitlin Groothuyzen, Alyssa Stevens, Emily Knowles, Emma McBride, Hannah Holly, Kaeli Hanson, Hannah Ysusi and Nia Apodaca each found the back of the cage in the balanced attack.

"After last night's game we talked a lot about having productive motion, and our girls did a great job of that today," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We were able to capitalize on that today with a lot of quality drives, which opened up a lot of the quality shots we had from the outside. We also really focused on our press defense today, which allowed our goalies to really step up and play well."

Courtney Hall totaled seven saves in the first two quarters in the cage for the Sunbirds, while Kaylin Drum added four blocks in the second half.

Kelsey Stumm led the Eagles with two goals.

FPU is back in action on Saturday, March 19 with two non-conference games. The Sunbirds host CSU Bakersfield at 11 a.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay at 5 p.m.
