Sunbirds walk it off twice in home opener

Fresno Pacific picked up two wins in walk-off fashion in its home opening doubleheader, defeating Stanislaus State 6-5 in both games.

Fresno Pacific 6, Stanislaus State 5 (Game 1)

Nick Pate drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning as Fresno Pacific walked-off with the win in its home opener on Friday night. FPU led 4-0 until the sixth inning and led 5-4 going into the ninth before the Warriors tied it up in the top half.

Pate finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the win. Leo Carrillo went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Josh Medeles struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings pitched, giving up four runs to get the no-decision. Kevin Magill picked up the win and a blown save.

The Sunbirds improved to 1-1 while the Warriors dropped to 3-1.



Fresno Pacific 6, Stanislaus State 5 (Game 2)

Fresno Pacific scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to win in walk-off fashion for the second time tonight. Down to their final strike, Davy Vartanian delivered a two-RBI double to tie the game 5-5. The Sunbirds were aided by two Warrior errors, the latter of which gave FPU the win after a grounder by Zac Smit.

Preston Scott went 2-for-4 with a solo homerun for the Sunbirds.

The Warriors got a strong outing from starting pitcher Nick Voumard, who struck out 12 over eight innings before SSU turned to its bullpen in the ninth.

Jake Martinez got the start for FPU, striking out seven over six innings of work while giving up four runs (two earned). Austin Tatum picked up the win in relief.

The two teams continue the four-game set tomorrow in Turlock.
