THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team concluded play at the Tina Finali Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record after earning a pair of wins on Saturday. The Sunbirds defeated Chapman 14-9 before knocking off host Cal Lutheran 9-7 in the nightcap.
Emily Marr led the Sunbirds offensively on the day with six total goals, while
Courtney Hall was a wall in the cage with 31 saves.
In the opener, FPU tallied 11 goals in the middle periods to take control of the game. The Sunbirds led by as many as eight in the game.
Marr led the way for FPU with four goals, while
Julia Ponce,
Alyssa Stevens,
Emily Knowles and
Hannah Holly added two goals apiece.
Kaitlin Groothuyzen and
Kaeli Hanson tallied the final goals with one each.
Courtney Hall recorded a season-best 19 saves in the cage for FPU defensively.
The nightcap was tied 5-5 at halftime before the Sunbirds shut down Cal Lutheran in the second half. The FPU defense only allowed two goals and used a 3-0 scoring run to take control of the game and earn the win.
Nia Apodaca had a hat trick for FPU offensively in the victory. Marr and Knowles added two goals apiece, while
Mikayla Scheer and Holly each found the back of the cage once.
Hall blocked 12 shots for the Sunbirds defensively and added an assist and a steal to her line.
The Sunbirds travel to Boston next week to compete in the Harvard Invite. Play starts on Saturday against Brown at 8:45 a.m.
