HAYWARD, Calif. - Fresno Pacific dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 6-5 in extras and 8-4 (7 innings) as Cal State East Bay earned a series sweep of the Sunbirds at Pioneer field.
FPU falls to 5-8 overall on the year and have dropped five straight. CSUEB moves to 9-2 overall with the sweep.
In the opener, the Sunbirds scored first after
Preston Scott singled and eventually stole home. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom half, however, to lead 3-1 after the opening frame.
FPU answered in the second after a two-RBI single from
Hunter Villanueva plated
Bryan Bucher and
Tristen Alvarez to even it at 3-3, and then took the lead following a
Derek Arkelian RBI single in fifth inning. After the Pioneers plated a run in the seventh and the eighth to take the lead, Scott delivered an RBI double to center in the ninth for FPU to put the game into extras. CSUEB would go on to win in the 10th on a wild pitch.
Scott finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a steal, while Villanueva collected two hits and two RBI.
Freshman
Rickie Garcia got the start on the hill and went 7.0 innings, allowing five earned while striking out four.
Josh Acosta took the loss (0-1) for FPU.
Ryan Wheat led CSUEB with three hits and two RBI.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings. The Sunbirds managed four runs in the final three frames, but it was too little too late.
Nick Pate went 2-for-4 with an RBI for FPU, while Scott delivered a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI and a run scored. Scott tripled to center in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Gene Cachu (0-2) took the loss for the Sunbirds.

The Sunbirds return home, where they hold a 5-1 record, on Tuesday, Feb. 23 against Cal State Monterey Bay at 5 p.m. The two teams met on Jan. 30 this season with the Otters taking a 5-2 win in Seaside.
