SEASIDE, Calif. - Fresno Pacific dropped its season opener 5-2 at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. The Sunbirds led early on but the Otters battled back behind three solo homeruns to claim the victory.
Preston Scott finished with two hits for FPU while
Hunter Villanueva delivered an RBI double in the first inning that scored
Leo Carrillo and gave the Sunbirds an early lead.
Josh Medeles started the game for the Sunbirds and went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs.
Jake Martinez,
Rickie Garcia and
Kyle Rasmussen pitched in relief with Martinez taking the loss.
"Overall we played well," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "We hit some balls hard and pitched really well overall, just left three pitches up and that ended up costing us. CSUMB is a good team. At this point in the season we're working on establishing roles. It's disappointing that we couldn't get this one but I really like the makeup of our team and we'll be ready for our home opener next week."
The Sunbirds kick off the home schedule by hosting Stanislaus State this Friday in a doubleheader starting at 4 pm
