HILO, Hawaii - Fresno Pacific came storming back from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime and win 3-2 on a golden goal at Hawaii Hilo on Monday. The Sunbirds (4-2, 2-0 PacWest) out-shot and out-possessed the Vulcans (2-1-2, 1-1 PacWest) throughout the contest, but found themselves trailing 2-0 with 23 minutes left to play.
Amber Rodriguez got the team on the board in the 68th minute, finishing a pass from
Rachelle Schiller to make it 2-1. The Sunbirds continued a barrage of shots until the 86th minute when Schiller put back a rebound to tie up the score in the closing minutes and eventually force overtime. The team would be a player up in the extra period as UHH received a red card in the 85th minute. Two minutes into the second overtime,
Mariah Montoya set up for a corner kick and found
Brooke Bingham who headed the ball into the goal for the game-winner.
"We were out-shooting and out-possessing them, but we were down, and that's been the story in a lot of our matches this year," said head coach
Rob Podeyn. "It would have been very easy to just concede it, but we continued to fight and work hard together, even in the struggle. Teams that understand what hard work is don't hit that breaking point where they give up. They find a way to be resilient and keep battling. We never stopped believing and continued to create chances down the stretch. Luckily we were able to capitalize down the stretch and hopefully that's a sign of things to come.
The Sunbirds out-shot the Vulcans 31-9 in the win and held a 17-3 shots on goal advantage and an 11-4 corner kick advantage.
FPU continues its Hawaii road trip, returning to Oahu for a Thursday match with Hawaii Pacific.
