HONOLULU - Two second-half goals by Fresno Pacific were not enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit as the Sunbirds suffered their first PacWest loss of the season on Thursday at HPU.
The Sharks (4-4, 1-2 PacWest) took the lead just seven minutes into the game and added goals in the 20th and 58th minutes for a 3-0 lead.
Bianka Garcia scored for the Sunbirds on a penalty kick in the 61st minute to cut the Sharks' lead to 3-1. In the 84th minute,
Taelor Williams created a chance in the box that led to an HPU own goal, making the score 3-2 but a second consecutive comeback was not in the works.
"We were unable to play our game today and struggled to adjust to some very tough field conditions," said head coach
Rob Podeyn. "The field was extremely slippery and it was very difficult to get any footing, which makes it tough to play quality soccer. HPU is very tough playing on their home field. If we play them in Fresno, it's a completely different game. I'm proud of the way we battled back once again, but we have to learn to adjust to challenging environments like this."
FPU (4-3, 2-1 PacWest) concludes its Hawaii road trip on Saturday at BYU Hawaii.
