Fresno Pacific dropped the first game of its four-game series with the PacWest's hottest team, falling 8-2 to #17 Dixie State. The Sunbirds (20-11, 8-9 PacWest) led 2-1 after five innings but faltered down the stretch, committing four errors in the game as DSU scored seven runs in the final four innings.
The Red Storm (21-8, 16-1 PacWest), who have won nine straight and 21 of their last 22 games, are ranked #2 in the West Region while FPU is #6.
Wilson Ashford took the loss for FPU but gave the Sunbirds a quality outing overall as he struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings and all five of the runs he gave up were unearned. Dylan File earned the win for DSU, striking out eight in six innings. Kolton Brost worked three no-hit innings out of the bullpen for the save.
Nick Pate went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI and
Preston Scott finished 2-for-4 for the Sunbirds.
Kevin Kline and Donald Glover had two hits and two RBI apiece for DSU.
The teams meet up again four a doubleheader tomorrow at 4 pm.
