FPU suffers doubleheader sweep to #17 DSU

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific suffered a pair of setbacks to #17 Dixie State Friday in PacWest action. The Sunbirds fell in the opener, 7-5, in a 13-inning marathon and were held hitless in the nightcap to lose, 1-0.

FPU falls to 20-13 overall and 8-11 in the PacWest, while DSU wins its 11th straight game and moves to 23-8 and 18-1 in league play.

The Red Storm used a late comeback for the second straight night in the opener, as the Sunbirds surrendered a run in the 8th inning and another in the 9th to move the game into extra frames. Each team was held scoreless for three innings until DSU's Kevin Kline connected on a two-run home run to make the final 7-5.

FPU's Baron Bower led the game off with a homer to left field on the first pitch of the game for his third of the season. He finished 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Travis Beck was 2-for-3 and Preston Scott totaled two RBI in the loss.

Josh Medeles was tagged for the loss (2-1). He threw six innings in relief and surrendered three earned runs while striking out six batters.  Drew Merlo started for the Sunbirds and left the game in line for the win in seven innings of work. He struck out four and allowed two earned runs.

Kline finished 2-for-6 and delivered the game-tying and game-winning hits for DSU. Reliever Jeremy Alderman earned the win with five scoreless innings, while closer Evan Parker notched his seventh save of the season with a perfect 13th.

In the nightcap, the Sunbirds were no-hit by DSU starter John Conquy. The senior tossed seven innings and struck out four, with the only blemish on his line being two walks.

Jake Martinez took the hard-luck loss after firing a complete game with four strikeouts. He allowed one run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch.
