Scott Powers Sunbirds to Series Sweep over Urban Knights

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific exploded for 22 runs to earn a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art at FPU Diamond Saturday. Eian Raeber and Jake Martinez tossed quality starts on the mound, while Preston Scott hit a pair of home runs to give the Sunbirds a PacWest series sweep over the Urban Knights. Scores were 10-4 in game one and 12-0 (7 innings) in the second in favor of FPU.

The Sunbirds improve to 24-14 overall and 12-12 in the PacWest with the sweep, while ART U moves to 6-31 overall and 4-20 in conference.

In game one, FPU scored four runs in the opening two frames to back Raeber on the mound. Scott opened the scoring with a three-run homer to right field in the first before Baron Bower singled home Travis Beck in the second. The offense would score two more times in the fifth and four times in the eighth, highlighted by Michael Tittle's solo home run in the fifth.

Scott led the offense with three RBI and finished 1-for-2 with a pair of runs. Bower was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, Michael Tittle was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and Nick Pate totaled two RBI.

Raeber earned his second win of the season after an 8.0 inning, two earned run and four strikeout performance.

In the nightcap, the Sunbirds used the same formula of scoring early and strong pitching. FPU scored five times in the first and took advantage of a two-out error from the Urban Knights. Scott followed with a two-run shot to center to highlight a four-run second, while Nick Pate drove in a run to highlight a two-run third.

Martinez would only need a single run to earn the win, however, as he fired five shutout innings to earn his fifth win of the season. He scattered five hits and finished with five strikeouts. Liam Toohey and Kellen Hackett preserved the shutout with one scoreless inning out of the bullpen apiece.

Michael Hostetler led the Sunbirds with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. He scored twice and drove in a run. Scott was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Travis Beck finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

FPU continues PacWest play next weekend on the road at Point Loma.
