Ashford sets strikeout record as FPU sweeps ART U

FRESNO, Calif. – Wilson Ashford set a new Fresno Pacific school record for career strikeouts as the Sunbirds swept a doubleheader over Academy of Art Friday at FPU Diamond. Scores were in favor of FPU 8-3 in the opener and 7-6 in the nightcap.

FPU moves to 22-14 overall and 10-12 in the PacWest, while the Urban Knights fall to 6-29 overall and 4-18 in league action.

Ashford (6-2) set the tone early in the opener and struck out the side in the top of the first. The second strikeout of the inning set the career record as he passed previous holder Matt Mazzoni. The lefty finished with a line of 7.0 innings, six hits and eight strikeouts. The only blemish on Ashford's line came on a solo home run in the sixth inning.

The Sunbirds' offense backed Ashford with a run in the fourth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth. Travis Beck opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the fourth, while Nick Pate added the run in the sixth with an RBI single to left field. The Sunbirds scored the final six times without a hit driving in a run.

Steven Lozier led the Sunbirds with two hits and two RBI, while Pate finished 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.

ART U received a quality start from Nate Gercken on the mound in 6.2 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs and struck out five.

In the nightcap, Preston Scott delivered a go-ahead and eventual game-winning two RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to put FPU up 7-6. The Sunbirds scored three times in the inning and entered the frame trailing 6-4.

Scott led the offense with three RBI and finished 2-for-5. Lozier stayed hot in game two with a 3-for-4, two run showing, while McKay France was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Michael Hostetler tallied two RBI with a pair of hits.

Tanner Irwin earned the win in relief with 2.2 innings of shutout ball. Josh Medeles recorded the two final outs via strikeout for his third save of the season.

ART U was led by Joseph Marchini's 2-for-4 game, which included a solo home run.

The two teams finish the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
