FPU settles for split with Vulcans

HILO, Hawaii - FPU picked up its first PacWest victory on Wednesday, winning on the Hawaiian islands for the first time by coming from behind for a 3-1 extra inning victory over Hawaii Hilo. The Sunbirds (10-7, 1-5 PacWest) had to settle for a split after blowing a 3-0 lead in game two on a day that featured adverse field conditions due to rain.

Josh Medeles threw seven quality innings in game one but got a no-decision. Kyle Rasmussen was stellar in relief, earning the win with four scoreless frames out of the pen. Austin Tatum, making his first start of the year, got off to a strong start in game two but ran into trouble in the fourth inning and was chased from the game. Tanner Irwin took the loss for FPU as Jordan Kurokawa tossed a complete game for the Vulcans (5-6, 3-3 PacWest).

Michael Tittle led FPU with four hits on the day, collecting two apiece in each game of the doubleheader. Nick Pate and Preston Scott each added three. Pate's hit gave the team the lead in the top of the 11th after Tittle had started the rally with an infield single. Bryan Bucher followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

In game two a Nick Stoll double sparked a three-run fifth inning that included a two-RBI hit by Tittle and a booming RBI double by Scott.

The two teams meet up again tomorrow to complete the four game series (weather permitting).
