Sunbirds back on track with sweep of UH Hilo

HILO, Hawaii - Preston Scott had four hits and Jake Martinez and Wilson Ashford put together dominant pitching performances as Fresno Pacific swept Hawaii Hilo in PacWest action to complete the program's first ever trip to the Hawaiian islands.

The Sunbirds (12-7, 3-5 PacWest), after a rocky start to the road trip, appeared to be returning to top form on Thursday as the team controlled all facets of the game for the doubleheader sweep. FPU collected 20 hits on the day, including four from Scott and three apiece from Nick Stoll, Nick Pate and Baron Bower, the latter of which returned to his leadoff spot in the lineup despite a lingering injury.

Martinez gave the team eight innings without allowing an earned run in game one before Drew Merlo closed out the final frame. Ashford tossed six scoreless innings in game two, scattering five hits and striking out four. Eian Raeber worked a 1-2-3 inning in relief to end it.

The team's leader in batting average, Michael Hostetler (.404), remained sidelined with an injury. The senior starting third baseman missed all eight games of the road trip.

The Sunbirds return home to take on nationally-ranked #19 Azusa Pacific for a four-game series beginning on Thursday.
