Hirschkorn wins #300 as Sunbirds fight off Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - FPU head coach Oscar Hirschkorn picked up his 300th career victory as the Sunbirds defeated Cal Baptist 6-5 on Friday night for their second straight win over the Lancers. The Sunbirds (20-8, 8-6 PacWest) came from behind once again, scoring four in the sixth and two in the seventh for the win.

"Very proud of our team tonight," said Hirschkorn. "They battled back against a good club and a good pitcher. Our pitching was outstanding. Merlo kept us in it and our bullpen was phenomenal. We took really good at-bats too, especially late in the game. The 300th win for our program is a great achievement but all the credit goes to the players and assistant coaches that I've had."

The four-run sixth was highlighted by a two-run homer from Nick Pate, who finished 2-for-4. Preston Scott also finished 2-for-4 and Michael Tittle was 1-for-5 with three RBI, including the go-ahead double in the seventh.

FPU lit up CBU ace Tyson Miller for eight hits and six runs in 6 2/3 innings, despite Miller's 10 strikeouts. The Lancers fell to 14-14, 6-4 in PacWest play.

Austin Tatum (1-0) earned the victory in relief of Drew Merlo who struck out five in five innings of work while surrendering four runs. Tanner Irwin and Josh Medeles struck out three apiece in relief, with Medeles picking up his second save of the season.

The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 am.
