RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresno Pacific dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 12-4 and 4-3 (7 innings) as California Baptist salvaged a Pacific West Conference series split at Totman Stadium. The Sunbirds allowed four home runs in the opener and then grounded into three double-plays in the finale to lead to the pair of losses.
FPU falls to 20-10 overall and 8-8 in league action, while CBU improves to 16-14 overall and 8-4 in the PacWest following the day sweep.
The Sunbirds scored first in the opener, but the Lancers answered with eight consecutive runs to take control of the game. FPU tallied three runs in the top of the eighth behind a
Michael Tittle RBI groundout and a
Preston Scott two-run home run, but any comeback thoughts were eliminated after CBU brought home four in the bottom half to make the final 12-4.
Jake Martinez (4-2) took the loss for the Sunbirds. He allowed six runs, all earned, and struck out three in 5.2 innings of work.
Tittle and Scott each finished 2-for-4, while
Nick Pate finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Jeremy McDonald earned the win for the Lancers in seven innings of work. He allowed one earned run and struck out two. Antonio Chavarria led the offense with two hits and three RBI.
Down 3-0 after five innings in the nightcap, Tittle put FPU on the scoreboard with a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2. CBU answered in the bottom half with a solo homer, which proved to be the game-winner.
John Koretoff tallied the Sunbirds' final run in the top of the seventh with a solo blast to left.
FPU put runners on base in the second, third and fifth innings, but each rally was ended with a double-play.
Eian Raeber (1-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs in five innings. The righty struck out five.
Tittle was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while
Nick Stoll collected two knocks for the Sunbirds.
CBU's Adam Hofacket earned the complete-game win and struck out four batters.
The Sunbirds return home to take on Dixie State in a four-game set with the opener scheduled for Thursday, April 2 at 6 p.m.
