Beck's slam helps Ashford break wins mark in FPU sweep

SAN FRANCISCO - The Fresno Pacific lineup was relentless on Saturday, collecting 30 hits over a doubleheader to complete a three-game sweep of San Francisco State on the road. Travis Beck hit a grand slam in game one and Drew Merlo twirled a three-hit shutout in game two as FPU improved to 9-2 on the season.

The #19-ranked Sunbirds got six hits on the day from Michael Hostetler, five from Preston Scott and four apiece from Michael Tittle and Nick Stoll in the wins.

Wilson Ashford went five innings to pick up the victory in game one, putting him all alone atop the program's all-time career win list with 22 (he was previously tied with former Sunbird Kelyn Schellenberg).

The Gators, who managed just three hits against Merlo in game two, dropped to 2-8 on the season.

"It's great to see the team come out and perform like this on the road," said head coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "One through nine we took exceptional at-bats and really wore down the opposing pitchers. It was great to see our offense pick it up today and our pitching continued to excel. Ashford gave us another quality start and Merlo was outstanding."

The Sunbirds pounded out 18 hits in game one, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after Beck delivered a two-run double in the third. The team exploded for five runs in the sixth, when Beck blasted a grand slam to right to make it 10-2. Austin Tatum, Trent Hinkle and Tyler Sturgill worked scoreless innings of relief.

FPU jumped ahead early in the second game as well, scoring three runs in the first inning. The first came on a wild pitch before Scott cleared the bases with a two-run double. Tittle and Nate Case added RBI singles later in the game for the 5-0 final.

Merlo gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out four to earn his first win of the season.

The Sunbirds will now begin PacWest conference play by making their first ever trip to the Hawaiian islands, beginning with a four-game series at Hawaii Pacific next weekend.
