CLAREMONT, Calif. – Fresno Pacific closed out the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament with a pair of wins on Saturday at Axelrood Pool. The Sunbirds defeated Caltech, 17-5, in the opener and took down Occidental, 12-5, in the finale.
The Sunbirds improve to 5-7 overall with the day sweep.
"Today was a solid day for the guys," said FPU head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We played a tight one last night and they knew we needed two wins today. One of our goals was to maintain our consistency and the level of play, and they did just that. The young guys got a lot of experience, but our older guys set the tone. Zlatko (Vlasic) really set the offensive pace with a lot of motion, drawing ejections and forcing drops. David (Maes) and Daniel (Seymour) capitalized on the opportunities created. Those three have really great chemistry and the team feeds off it. Dillon (Robinson) continues to back our defense, averaging over 14 saves a game. It was a good weekend of team play."
In the morning game, the Sunbirds came out firing offensively and scored the first seven goals of the match. FPU only allowed two first-half goals and led 12-2 at the intermission.
David Maes recorded five goals to lead FPU, while
Erik Brown,
Kyle Madel and
Nick Stegall scored two goals apiece.
Zach Weaver,
Daniel Seymour,
Zlatko Vlasic,
Greg Bracamonte,
Jamison Shapland and
Jeff Miller scored a goal each in the win. Miller added three assists.
Dillon Robinson led the defense with 14 saves in the cage.
FPU led from start-to-finish in the nightcap and used a 6-0 run to start the game to take control of the match. The Sunbirds held a 7-2 advantage at halftime and led by as many as eight late in the third period.
Maes led FPU with four goals in the win, while Vlasic added a hat trick. Baracamonte tallied a pair of goals, while
