Sunbirds Fall to Golden Eagles in WWPA Semifinal Match

GENEVA, Ohio — In an attempt for a spot in the WWPA championships, the No. 3 west seed Fresno Pacific faced off against No. 1 west seed Concordia University in the WWPA semifinals, ultimately ending with a final score of 5-15 at the SPIRE Aquatics Center. The Sunbirds managed to score twice on penalty shots, but Concordia's strong performance in the second quarter, scoring six goals, secured their victory.

Concordia opened the match with a pair of goals within the first minute, as Hugo Wouters scored, and Dimitrios Koritsas followed, setting a 2-0 lead. The Sunbirds responded with goals from Christiano Sandino and Tristin Fox, leveling the score. Concordia regained momentum and despite Fox's late first-quarter goal, Concordia held a narrow lead.

The second quarter saw Concordia extend their advantage with five consecutive goals, including two by Koritsas, making it 9-3 at halftime. Concordia maintained control in the second half, adding six more goals, while the Sunbirds managed only two more scores, resulting in a decisive 15-5 victory for Concordia.

Fox led the Sunbirds in scoring with two goals and added an assist, contributing significantly to the offensive effort. Blake Johnson found the back of the net once and also earned a steal and a drawn exclusion. Matthew Dillsaver scored on his only shot attempt, showcasing efficiency in his play. In goal, Chase Hammes recorded 11 saves and made three steals, providing a strong defensive presence.

NEXT UP: The Sunbirds compete for third place on Sunday, November 22 in a matchup against Gannon. The final battle of the season for the Sunbirds starts at 8 am (11 am ET).
