Fresno Pacific University lost their second conference match to rival Azusa Pacific University 11-7.
The Sunbirds struggled to find the goal as shots went just wide and off the post throughout the match.
Alyssa Stevens netted the team's first goal with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter followed by
Kaeli Hanson scoring with less than a minute to play. APU was able to regain a lead with 17 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
Emily Marr and
Mallory Rettig scored in the second quarter. The Cougars scored three goals in both the first and second quarters to take a two-goal lead at intermission.
Freshman
Kaitlin Fletcher scored a hat trick with two goals in the third quarter and a third goal with ten seconds remaining in the game. The Sunbirds were unable to take a lead from the Cougars as they out scored the Sunbirds 5-3 in the second half. The Sunbirds fell to 0-2 in GCC after the 11-7 loss to the Cougars.
"We came out with the right mentality and intensity tonight," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We got anxious and tried to force our scoring opportunities. We need to settle into those situations and learn how to finish. That will come with experience and feeling comfortable with the chances we create."
Fresno Pacific will travel to La Jolla, Calif. and take on No. 13 UC San Diego at 6:00 pm on March 28.
