Sunbirds win both matches in first day at Wolverine Invite

Gm 1: FPU 4, Mercyhurst 2
Gm 2: FPU 9, Siena 7

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In the team's first appearance at the Wolverine Invitational, the Sunbirds swept Mercyhurst (4-2) and Division 1 Siena (9-7).

The first win came over Mercyhurst 4-2. After a slow start with both teams scoreless in the first quarter, Candice Cobarrubias kicked off the scoring  early in the second quarter with her only goal of the match. Cobarrubias was followed by freshman Kaitlin Fletcher who scored with a minute remaining in the half to give the Sunbirds the lead.

Mercyhurst fought back and tied the game during the mid-point of the third quarter. Emily Marr scored the go ahead goal with three seconds remaining in the third and netted a second goal with under a minute to play in the final quarter. The Sunbirds kept Mercyhurst off the board in the fourth to secure a two-goal victory.

During the second game, the Sunbirds defeated Siena 9-7. The Sunbirds fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter but Nia Apodaca netted a goal with only seconds remaining. The Sunbirds defense did not allow a goal during the second quarter while the offense added three giving the team a 4-2 lead at the half.

Alyssa Stevens scored her first goal of the tournament to being a 3-1 run by the Sunbird during the third quarter extending their lead to four. Despite a  four goal rally in the fourth quarter, Siena was not able to over come the Sunbirds offense. Apodaca and Stevens scored a goal each during the fourth quarter to secure the win. 

The Sunbirds tallied goals from six different players with Apodaca leading the way with three goals in the victory of Division 1 Siena. 

"This is a our programs first big travel trip and a great learning experience for us," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "The girls played great today securing both these two solid wins against seasoned programs. Our team continues to show growth and confidence with every game."

Tomorrow the Sunbirds will conclude the Wolverine Invitational facing Notre Dame College and #18 Michigan.
