Sunbirds sweep final day of Posada Royale

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Having played two talented teams yesterday, Fresno Pacific had a day of thrilling competition defeating La Verne 6-5 and besting Chapman in overtime 7-6 on the final day of the Posada Royale Invitational. 

"We played tough, smart defense which in the end secured our wins," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "Our recognition was much better this morning and we played with confidence. Our team is working hard as we continue to grow and learn. I'm very proud of them. Now we are preparing for Chapman this afternoon."

In the cage, Kelsie Harvey continued to show her dominance turning in 11 saves and five steals in the victory over La Verne. The Sunbirds played aggressively throughout the match which resulted in 22 steals. Offensively the goals were spread amongst five players with Mallory Rettig netted two for the Sunbirds while Alyssa Stevens, Emily Marr, Candice Cobarrubias and Nia Apodaca added a goal each. 

The game was tied 1-1 after the first quarter but the Sunbirds scored three times during second quarter giving them a two-goal advantage and they retained a lead for the remainder of the match. 

In their second game, the Sunbirds fought back overcoming a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to win during overtime.

Marr lead the offense with three goals followed by Kaitlin Fletcher and Stevens with two goals apiece. Marr scored her final goal at with .08 remaining in regulation to send the match into overtime tied 5-5. During the second overtime Stevens netted two goals with her final goal coming from eight meters out beating the buzzer by .01 seconds for the victory.

Harvey dominated the goal having 21 saves and two steals in the final match of the weekend.

"Our girls showed a lot of determination and heart fighting back," said Suhovy. "I'm incredibly proud of our girls and what they accomplished today. We've continued to grow and learn to compete as a team with every game we play."

FPU will return to action at home on March 8 hosting #11 Loyola Marymount at 9 am the #2 Stanford at 2:30 pm at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
