Box Score
Fresno Pacific won its fifth consecutive PacWest game, hanging on for a 73-70 home victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday night.
The Sunbirds (10-12, 5-9 PacWest) got 18 points and nine assists from
Malcolm Griffin in the win.
Jackson Carbajal had 16 points and
Trevon Clayton and
Johnell Thompson added 12 apiece. Clayton grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had a thunderous dunk with 49 seconds left to put FPU up by seven.
FPU would miss four free-throws down the stretch and NDNU would capitalize, drawing to within three with five seconds left. Thompson got the ball however and sped away from the NDNU defenders to run out the clock.
"I'm proud of our guys," said head coach Chris Wright. "At one point we'd lost 10 games in a row. A lot of people wrote us off. For these guys to continue to work hard and build positive momentum has been fun to see. It's been exciting. Tonight we did a really good job in transition in the second half and I thought that was the difference in the game."
Johnny Hutton had 18 points for the Argos, who dropped to 5-8 in PacWest play, 6-13 overall. NDNU guard Simon Enciso, who scored 33 against FPU last week, was held to just six points.
"Jackson did a tremendous job guarding him tonight and not allowing him to get in a rhythm," said Wright.
The Sunbirds take on conference rival Point Loma this Saturday at home at 4:30 pm. FPU will be hosting Faith & Family Night and will also be honoring the FPU men's soccer team with a banner presentation of its PacWest Conference title. Head coach
Jaime Ramirez will share his testimony after the game.
