Fresno Pacific dropped the final three sets of a four-set match against visiting Cal Baptist on Friday night in a defensive battle that saw both teams hit under .100. The Sunbirds (20-8, 14-5 PacWest) were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.
Hannah Butler put together a masterful defensive performance with a match-high 34 digs, helping hold the PacWest attack percentage-leading Lancers to .098 hitting on the night.
Kathleen Anderson had 15 kills (.375) to go with six blocks and
Rupia Inck added 13 kills for FPU, but the Sunbirds were plagued by 34 attack errors and 12 service errors, hitting just .070 as a team.
"Defensively we played extremely well," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "Hannah was outstanding with 34 digs in just four sets. Overall though we're really disappointed that we couldn't come up with a better showing offensively. 34 attack errors and 12 service errors is simply not going to get it done against a quality opponent like CBU."
Michelle Waber had 17 kills and 16 digs to pace the Lancers, who improved to 16-12, 12-8 in PacWest play. CBU had 12 team blocks in the win.
Gabriela Macedo added 15 digs and Inck finished with 11 for FPU.
Bissie DenHartog and
Sarah McCann combined for 42 assists and Butler led the team with three service aces.
The Sunbirds host Dixie State tomorrow at 3 pm in the season finale at 3 pm. It will be senior day for five FPU seniors: Anderson, Inck,
Alyse Arentz,
Amy Siemens and
Toni Murphy.
