Water Polo drops season opener on the road

Sunbirds unable to overcome slow first quarter

Box Score

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Sunbirds opened their 2014 season on the road against Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers came out strong in the first half of the game generating two goals in the first stanza and adding five more before intermission.

Defensively the Sunbirds stepped after the break as the Sunbirds added their first goal just out of intermission and five more in the final stanza. However, the slow offensive start proved to be more than the Sunbirds could overcome.

There were some new faces in the pool for the Sunbirds.  Sophomore transfer Alyssa Stevens made an immediate impact for the team. She scored four goals in her debut in navy and orange.

In the cage, Kelsie Harvey had a strong game providing nine saves and four steals for the Sunbirds.

"We came out slow in the first half but picked it up in the second," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We managed to get our freshmen a lot of experience though. They are learning how to play at this level and work as a cohesive team."

The Sunbirds will return to action next weekend in the season's first tournament in the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. On Friday, Sunbirds will face California Baptist at 12:30 p.m. then California at 6:20 p.m.
