The Sunbirds held a one-goal lead midway through the third quarter, but were unable to hang on in a 10-7 loss to Azusa Pacific on the final day of the CCAA Invitational Tournament.
FPU (2-21) got outstanding performances from freshman Emily Marr and senior Dani Mortimer who each scored two goals for the Sunbirds. Freshman Candice Cobarrubias and sophomore Nia Apodaca also scored one each.
Azusa Pacific (10-20) jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first quarter with a strong effort in goal from Jessica Armagost. Armagost finished the match with 10 saves.
The Sunbirds answered back with three goals in the second quarter and took a 3-2 lead with 3:06 left in the half before the Cougars evened the score at 3-3 heading into the break.
The third quarter was another back and forth battle. The Sunbirds got goals from three different players in the third quarter, but Courtney Folsom scored for APU with 16-seconds left in the quarter to tie the match at 6-6.
Azusa used the momentum to propel them to three quick goals in the fourth quarter and put the match out of reach for the shorthanded Sunbird squad.
Kelsie Harvey was named to the All-Tournament Second Team for her play during the weekend. She finished the tournament with a combined 34 saves in three matches.
Fresno Pacific will get one final shot at Azusa Pacific this coming weekend at the NCAA Transition Mini-Tournament.
