Box Score - Game 2
Monterey Bay, Calif.—The Sunbirds hung tough but came up short in a pair of losses in Monterey Bay to fall to 1-4 on the season.
Fresno Pacific fell early in the day to preseason top-20 team Santa Clara 17-8. Goalkeeper Kelsie Harvey had a solid day in goal starting with the first game where she stopped 12 shots and tallied five steals.
The Sunbirds also fell in an afternoon showdown for the second time this season to Cal State Monterey Bay 12-8. Freshman Emily Marr led the way with five goals for the Sunbirds who held the Otters to just one goal in the fourth quarter. Harvey again had a rock solid game in the cage stopping 14 shots and taking two steals.
“For our first road trip it was a little rough. Santa Clara was our first DI opponent this season and we were a little timid in the first half. The second half we settled down and began to play a more consistent game. Santa Clara is a strong and aggressive team and we gained some valuable experience playing them,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “In our second game against Monterey we accomplished several of the goals we set for ourselves. Freshman Emily Marr had a strong offensive showing with five goals in that game. Over all it wasn't quite what we hoped for this weekend but are improving and gaining experience with each game.”
The Sunbirds will be back in San Bernardino next Saturday for a triple-header with Whittier, Occidental and Cal State San Bernardino.
