Sunbirds fall in final seconds to Dixie State

Box Score The Sunbirds nearly earned their first win of the season but, for the second time this season, were beaten by a jumper in the final seconds in an 86-84 loss to Dixie State. FPU had five players hit double-figures for the first time this season.

Five players scored in double figures for the Sunbirds (0-7, 0-1 PacWest), led by Charde Stevens' first double-double of the season 17 points and 14 rebounds. Bree Alvarez and Jenay Herring added 16 points apiece. Jazmine Simpson had 13 and Patrice Saindon finished with 10.

"It was a tough way to lose, but I am so proud of the way our team fought for 40 minutes and that is all we can ask of them as coaches," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "This team is making progress every day and we are getting better every single day."

Haley Holmstead hit the game-winning jumper for the Red Storm (2-4, 1-1 PacWest) on the previous possession with seven seconds remaining. FPU was similarly snake bitten in their second game of the season against Seattle Pacific.

Fresno Pacific exploded offensively scoring a season-high 84 points. The most points scored by the Sunbirds since a 97 point outburst against Hope International in the regular season finale in 2012.

"We were very balanced you couldn't just defend one person," said Wilson. "We had 20 assists which was huge for us. It was really a very positive thing for us as coaches to see."

The Sunbirds return to the court on December 14 against California Baptist.
