FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fresno Pacific struggled for much of the night but held on for a 67-64 victory over the University of Mary (ND) to win its second game at the GCI Alaska Invitational.
Malcolm Griffin had 19 points and
Phil Jackson added 17 for the Sunbirds (5-2) while
Trevon Clayton finished with 13 points.
"We will take an ugly win over a loss any day," said head coach Chris Wright. "I'm glad we were able to find a way to win tonight. We'll need a much better effort tomorrow."
With the game tied in the final minute, Griffin knocked down a floater in the paint to give the Sunbirds a 66-64 lead. After a Sunbird stop,
Josh Mason made 1-of-2 free-throws to make it 67-64. Griffin would steal the ball on the final possession for the win.
Marc Musungayi led the Marauders (2-2) with 18 points.
FPU concludes the tournament tomorrow night against host Alaska Fairbanks. The Nanooks defeated Emporia State 67-58 tonight and beat Mary 84-57 the night before.
