Sunbirds light up Silverswords 4-0 on season-high 32 shots

Box Score

HONOLULU - Fresno Pacific dominated every facet of the match, unleashing a season-high 32 shots and 18 shots on goal as the Sunbirds (6-4-1, 4-2-1 PacWest) defeated Chaminade 4-0 in the third match of their Hawaii road trip.

The Sunbird offense was connecting on passes all day and controlled possession throughout, with the Silverswords rarely getting the ball past midfield. The 32 shots were the most since August 30, 2011 when the Sunbirds had 39 in a 4-1 win over Simpson.

"One of our main goals today was to get shots off," said assistant coach Sue Negrete. "We really encouraged them to look for those shooting opportunities and just create as many chances as possible."

Ashley Tallon started the scoring in the 17th minute, finding the net for the second straight match. Tallon has been a breakout player at the forward position, particularly in the last few matches.

"She has the work ethic and the drive to be such an effective player up top," said Negrete. "Her and Kelly (Nikkel) did a great job of working together today. They've been putting pressure on the ball up top and creating turnovers leading to more chances."

Haley Tallon scored later in the first half to make it 2-0 with Kelly Nikkel assisting on both goals. In the second half, FPU freshmen Ana Walker and Brooke Bingham both connected on deep shots to score the first goals of their Sunbird careers.

Caressa Archie and the Sunbird defense was rock solid in front of Sarah King, who posted the shutout with three saves.

"The defense did a great job of limiting any scoring opportunities," said Negrete. "They worked as a strong unit together as they have all year."

Lauren Ishii made 14 saves in goal for the Silverswords (0-11, 0-7 PacWest).

Negrete and fellow assistant coach Scott Garvis coached the team with head coach Erik Farfan sitting out one game due to a red card in Monday's match at Hawaii Pacific. Negrete says the team is ready for its next challenge on Saturday as the Sunbirds close out their road trip against BYU Hawaii.

"They want it," said Negrete. "They're hungry and they're ready to go. After the first match here in Hawaii the team regrouped and refocused on the goal. They have that goal in their sights and they want to be a top team in this league. They know that the way to do that is to finish opportunities and continue to put the ball in the back of the net when it counts."
