Sunbirds rally in second; earn first win of the season

Box Score

The Sunbirds scored their first win of the season in a 9-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Kelsie Harvey stopped 17 shots in goal and came away with three steals for Fresno Pacific.

Dani Mortimer scored four goals on the day and leads the team with nine on the season. Nia Apodaca scored twice in the deciding fourth quarter and Jennifer Cobb poured in two goals as well. Samantha Clark added a goal for FPU (1-2) in their final home game in the month of January.

"We are excited to get our first win of the season,” said Suhovy. “I am proud of how hard the girls fought to come back from a 3 goal deficit in the first quarter.  We came out a little scattered and nervous with only 1 sub on our bench today.  However, they played hard until the final second and earned this win as a team.  We are continually impressed with how much heart and determination our team is showing this year."

The Coyotes (0-2) went up 3-1 after the first period before two Mortimer goals tied the match up at 3-3 heading into the break. Harvey had six stops in the second quarter that allowed the Sunbirds to get back into the match.

In the second half Fresno Pacific was again strong on defense allowing just one goal in the third quarter and two goals by Apodaca in the fourth iced the game for Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds head out on the road for five straight matches beginning next weekend when they take on Santa Clara and CSU Monterey Bay in Monterey.
