Sunbirds drop season openers to APU and CSUMB

Game One Results

Game Two Results

Fresno Pacific women's Water Polo opened the 2013 season with two matches on Saturday at the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex, suffering two losses to Azusa Pacific 12-8 and Cal State Monterey Bay 11-4.

Dani Mortimer led the Sunbirds in the two matches, scoring five goals while Kelsie Harvey played well defensively in the cage totaling 23 saves on the day.

"For the first games of the season I am very proud of our girls. We have some up hill battles ahead of us this season but they showed a lot of determination and fight,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “They are learning quickly and we expect an improvement each weekend we play.”

In game one, FPU jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter behind a Mortimer goal to lead 1-0.

APU responded in the second quarter, however, scoring five goals to take the lead 5-4 at the half. FPU was led by three goals from Mortimer and one from Brenna Woods at intermission.

The Cougars continued the strong play in the third quarter, scoring three goals to FPU's one from Nia Apodaca to put the score at 8-5 heading into the final period.

Fresno Pacific came out strong scoring a quick goal in the final period to pull within two, but the comeback fell short as APU responded with four goals to close out the victory 12-8.

The Cougars were led by four goals from Alyssa Hess.

In the second match on the night, Fresno Pacific was overwhelmed by the CSUMB offense in the 11-4 loss.

FPU fell behind quickly in the first quarter being held scoreless while Cal State Monterey Bay scored three goals. Mortimer got the Sunbirds on the board in the second quarter, before the Otters continued the stellar offensive play scoring three goals to go into the half up 6-2.

The Otters finished off the victory in the second half with more strong offensive play, outscoring the Sunbirds 5-2 in the final two quarters.

CSUMB was led by three goals from Alex Tyrell.

In the two matches, FPU also received two goals from Emily Marr, two from Samantha Clark, one from Jennifer Cobb, and one apiece from Apodaca and Woods.

“A standout for us this weekend was Samantha Clark really taking ownership of her roll leading the team in drawn ejections, sparking the offensive side of the pool for us,” said Suhovy. “We are glad to have the first games under our belt and work on where we need to go from here."

FPU continues play on January 26 at the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex against Cal State San Bernardino at 1:00 pm.
