HONOLULU - The Sunbirds arrived in Hawaii last week with no PacWest wins to their name. They'll leave with a 3-1-2 league record after completing an undefeated four-game road trip in Hawaii after a 2-1 overtime win at Chaminade.
Jae Slocum scored a golden goal eight minutes into overtime off a
Haley Tallon pass.
Caressa Archie had scored for the Sunbirds with 14 minutes to play before the Silverswords promptly tied it up. FPU is now 3-1-2 in PacWest play, adding three victories and a tie this week to put them third in the 14-team league.
"We're thrilled to be coming back to the mainland with four good results against very good programs," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "This trip really instilled some belief in this group. We knew we had wins like this in us, it's just been a matter of believing. We not only positioned ourselves well in the conference but also increased our belief and ability to rely on each other as teammates."
It was a competitive game throughout, with both the Sunbirds and the Silverswords (0-7, 0-5 PWC) getting plenty of chances but being unable to capitalize.
"Chaminade is a lot better than their record indicates as far as their competitiveness," said Farfan. "They came out with a lot of heart and passion."
The Sunbirds had to adapt to a much faster field-of-play on field-turf after a slower-paced much last night. FPU out-shot Chaminade 7-3 in the first half but the teams entered the break scoreless. The second half was much of the same until Archie found the net for the second straight game after a corner kick by
Jessica Castillo.
Archie settled the ball after the Chaminade goalie attempted to deflect it and buried it from close range for the 1-0 lead. CUH's Alex Ishihara would tie it up just 40 seconds later after an FPU defensive breakdown.
Tallon would break away from CUH the defense in the overtime with a great run down the left side. As she got to the end line she turned in toward the goal and hit Slocum with a perfect pass that she buried into the net for the game-winner.
All in all the Sunbird defense played exceptional, as they've done all season.
Sarah King made five saves in goal and the backline held strong throughout the game, surrendering just the one goal in 98 minutes.
It was the fifth overtime game of the season for FPU and the first overtime victory (1-1-3).
FPU is back at home this Thursday night, taking on Dominican (3-3, 2-4 PWC) at 7:30 pm. Dinner will be available for purchase as the Sunbirds have invited Taco Trucks to Ramirez Field for the remaining home games.
