Sunbirds use late push to overwhelm UHH

Box Score The Sunbirds used a flurry of late goals to knock off Hawaii Hilo 6-0 in their first road match of the season.

Senior forward Paul Islas led the way for Fresno Pacific with three goals for the hat-trick including the games' first goal in the eighth minute.

“This was huge for us,” said head coach Jaime Ramirez. “It is a moral builder for us. You could just tell that today, we were the better team.”

The Sunbirds were dominant in the run of play, controlling much of the possession on the day and outshooting the Vulcans 21-5 including 11 shots on goal. Islas and Alvaro Nogales accounted for eight of the 11 shots on goal.

Fabian Rangel got his first start in goal and helped FPU record their third shutout of the season. Rangel finished the game with one save in his second shutout and has allowed just one goal in 170 minutes this season.

“Fabian has been playing well for us and it just gave us a different look with him in goal,” said Ramirez.

The one save required of Rangel tells you all you need to know about how stifling the defensive side of the ball was for Fresno Pacific. The back four of Luke Tyler, Ivan Mirkovic, Nick Watson and Julian Mattaliano allowed just one shot on goal.

While it didn't take long for the Sunbirds to strike it would be forty minutes until the second goal when Watson got the second half started right with a goal in the 49th minute.

The Vulcans had a few opportunities to capitalize on chances but were unable to do so despite their energetic and intense play.

“They worked so hard,” said Raimirez. “It was 2-0 for a long time and they play with so much passion and so much heart. They have some good players.”

The Sunbirds struck again on a breakaway goal by Paul Islas to push the lead to 3-0. Islas scored again in the 86th minute to finish off the hat-trick, the second of his career.

Alvaro Nogales and Fabricio Nazare also added goals for Fresno Pacific in the 82nd and 83rd minutes respectively.

The Sunbirds are back in action Monday against BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders are 1-1-1 on the season.
