Despite some quality defensive efforts, Fresno Pacific was defeated twice on Saturday in Bakersfield at the Roadrunner Invitational II, falling 7-3 to Cal State Bakersfield and 10-6 to Redlands.
Malory Rettig,
Jaimie Lugo,
Nicolette Haley, and
Krista Loper led the Sunbirds offensively on the day each scoring two goals each while
Kelsie Harvey finished the day with 22 saves in the net.
FPU (4-21) jumped out to a quick start in game one against CSU Bakersfield (17-10), but was held scoreless in the second half leading to a 7-3 defeat. The Sunbirds scored two goals jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the Roadrunners evened the score by the end of the first quarter. FPU tacked on another goal in the second, but fell behind at the half 4-3.
Katlin Hicks, Lugo, and Haley led the Sunbirds offensively in the half scoring one goal each. The offense was shut out in the second half however, while CSU Bakersfield managed three goals in the third producing the 7-3 final.
Harvey played well in the net for Fresno Pacific with 12 saves while Alex Bayer led the Roadrunners defensive effort with 13 saves of her own.
In the second match of the afternoon, Fresno Pacific was defeated 10-6 by Redlands (11-9). The Sunbirds started the game on fire, scoring four goals in the first period jumping out to a 4-2 lead.
Following the quick start, FPU struggled the next two quarters being shut out before being able to push across two goals in the final quarter. Redlands scored eight goals in the final three periods to earn the victory 10-6.
Rettig and Loper scored two goals each in the loss, while Lugo and Haley each added a goal to finish off the scoring for Fresno Pacific. Harvey finished the game with 10 saves in the loss as well.
Fresno Pacific travels to San Diego to play three matches on March 30th through the 31st taking on Azusa Pacific, Brown, and UC San Diego.
