Fresno Pacific led #11 Azusa Pacific for most of the first half before succumbing to the Cougars in a woeful second half, falling 75-55. FPU, which lost its seventh straight, had defeated the Cougars by 20 points in Fresno earlier this season.
This time it was APU returning the favor, outscoring the Sunbirds 27-8 over the last three minutes of the first half and the first seven minutes of the second half. That erased a 23-19 Sunbird lead and allowed the Cougars to improve to 20-5, 9-4 in GSAC play.
Donte Nicholas scored 23 points and had eight rebounds to lead FPU.
Matt Christman added 11 points.
Antonio Credit had a stellar night against an athletic Cougar frontline, leading all players with 14 rebounds.
Tyler Monroe had 21 points and nine rebounds to pace the Cougars. B.J. Porter added 17 off the bench.
The Sunbirds dipped below .500 for the first time this season, falling to 12-13 (3-10 GSAC). FPU, currently tied for eighth place with Hope International, hosts San Diego Christian on Saturday at 4:30 pm. The last-place Hawks (6-14, 2-11 GSAC) picked up their second GSAC win tonight, defeating Vanguard on the road 88-73. SDCC's other win came against the Sunbirds, 61-55 in El Cajon.
