Oaks stifle Sunbird bats, snap 6-game win streak

Box Score

#17 Fresno Pacific saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in Atherton as Menlo held the Sunbirds to just four hits in a 4-1 win. Robbie De La Cruz hit a solo homer for FPU's only run and Ryan Cheek threw five scoreless innings of relief for the Sunbirds, who dropped to 9-3 on the season.

Menlo, a team that FPU defeated 13-0 last season, came in with a 1-6 record but would get a quality pitching performance from starter Sean Sweeney, who went 6 1/3 innings giving up one run and striking out five.

The Oaks got three runs off Sunbird starter Josh Medeles in the first after some shaky defense and a two-run homer by cleanup man Collin Forgey. That would be all the runs the team would need as FPU managed only the solo shot from De La Cruz in the fifth.

Karlan Andrews went 2-for-4 and Michael Vaughn was 1-for-3 with a double for FPU's only other hits.

The Sunbirds have nearly a week off before their next game, when they hit the road again to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 pm next Tuesday, February 21st, in what will be the team's final non-conference game before GSAC play.
