Fresno Pacific snapped its seven-game losing streak, defeating San Diego Christian 79-70 on Saturday.
Donte Nicholas had 31 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Sunbirds, while
Matt Christman caught fire from beyond the arc for 18 points in the win.
Antonio Credit gave the team a force inside, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Kenny Bradford added 11 points in the win.
"I feel like we got a 9,000-pound gorilla off our backs, our team needed this win in the worst possible way," said head coach Chris Wright. "I'm proud of our guys, they stepped up and made the plays it took to win."
The Sunbirds (13-13, 4-10 GSAC) outscored the Hawks 11-3 over the last four minutes to secure the victory, dropping SDCC to 2-11 in league play and evening up the season series.
FPU did a tremendous job of taking care of the ball, only turning it over seven times on the night. The Sunbirds shot an impressive 50 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line.
They did allow the Hawks to make 14-of-28 from three-point range, but would come up with key stops when they were needed most down the stretch.
Perhaps the biggest shot of the night was a three-pointer by Christman with 1:58 remaining that doubled the Sunbirds lead, putting them up 73-67. FPU then got a big stop on the other end and made two free throws to essentially put the game out of reach.
The Sunbirds remain tied for eighth in the GSAC after Hope International pulled an upset of first-place #9 Westmont tonight. FPU hosts Biola (18-8, 8-6 GSAC) on Tuesday night, looking to complete a season sweep of the Eagles. A buzzer-beater by Nicholas downed Biola in La Mirada earlier this season.
