Battle of the Birds: Sunbirds crush Hawks 8-0

Box Score

Fresno Pacific scorched the visiting Hawks from Holy Names 8-0 in the Sunbirds fifth win in six matches.  The Sunbirds also hosted Make-a-Wish night and all proceeds from game admission and a kicking contest were donated to Make-A-Wish foundation as part of the NCAA Division II "Week of Wishes."

Senior forward Paul Islas and freshman forward Alvaro Nogales each had a hat-trick in the victory. Islas also recorded two assists on the night for the Sunbirds (7-4, 5-3).

"I was really surprised at the score," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "I know we are capable of doing that and to finally do it against a very good opponent was huge. Very few times are you going to have an opportunity to do this against a team like Holy Names and you have to take every opportunity."

Holy Names (5-4-1, 3-4) was hit early on with a yellow card 30 seconds into the match when Jessi Guerrerro was called for a flop inside the FPU penalty box.

FPU dominated the run of play early on and it took just four minutes for the Sunbirds to strike. Pressure put on by Islas forced an own goal by Holy Names and it was off to the races.

"Paul got into the game right away," said Ramirez. "He made some significant contributions early on."

Just three minutes later Islas struck for the first of his three goals on the night. Luke Tyler found Islas ahead of the defense and he would not miss the breakaway chance to put the Sunbirds up 2-0.

The Sunbirds continued to find chances throughout the first half just missing one midway through the first on a great through ball to Islas who was just offside.

Nogales got in on the scoring late in the first with a beautiful cross from Islas that found him for the easy score. Fresno Pacific went into the half comfortably up 3-0.

"I'm really happy to get the hat-trick," said Nogales. "We are happy because it was a great victory for us."

The Hawks were able to make a push early in the second half forcing some good saves by goalkeeper Fabian Rangel who started his third straight match in goal for FPU. The defense held despite the constant pressure and was able to avoid conceding a goal throughout the rest of the match.

Nogales and Islas traded goals in the second half starting with a goal by Islas in the 52nd minute. Nogales followed with a goal of his own in the 56th minute before Islas put in his third of the night to get the hat-trick.

Fabricio Nazare got in on the scoring action when he was taken down inside the penalty box for the PK opportunity. He buried it past the keeper and gave the Sunbirds a 7-0 lead.

Nogales capped off his night with his third goal in the 71st minute, the final by the Sunbirds on the night.

"That was probably the best game we played all season," said Islas. "We were moving the ball really well and playing one-touch when we needed too."

The win gives the Sunbirds 15 points in the Pac West and keeps them in the hunt for a conference title. FPU is back in action this Wednesday in San Rafael against Dominican.
