Fresno Pacific dropped a close game to #20 UC San Diego, 10-8, and fell to #8 Arizona State 21-5 on Sunday during the second day of the San Diego State Tournament. The Sunbirds felt good about their performance, despite their losses to NCAA programs.
"I received nothing but compliments from the other coaches," said head coach Bryan Suhovy on the tournament as a whole. "We represented the program really well this weekend."
Michelle Kaplan had three goals on the day to lead the Sunbirds offensively. She was followed by Jaimie Lugo, Katie Rayner and Jenn Wolter, all with two. Brittney Guerrero, Nicolette Haley, Mallory Retig and Jennifer Cobb each had one. Dani Mortimer had 14 saves.
Against UC San Diego the Sunbirds had a solid first half, ending the first quarter up 2-1 and the second tied at four.
The third quarter would do FPU in, though, as the Tritons outscored the Sunbirds 4-2 to take an 8-6 lead. In the fourth, Fresno Pacific was able to tie the game at eight, but UC San Diego scored twice in the last 2:30 to take the 10-8 win.
"All in all, we played really well against San Diego, an experience team," said Suhovy. "We had some missed opportunities at the end that would have kept us in the game, but we came to play and we did."
A strong Arizona State team led the whole way against the Sunbirds, taking the 21-5 win.
"It was a great opportunity to play a great team," said Suhovy. "We got on the board early in the game and played well."
Fresno Pacific will return home to play its final home games of the season this Saturday against CSU East Bay and Vanguard at Sunnyside High School.
