Fresno Pacific dropped two games during day one of the San Diego State Tournament on Saturday, a tough 8-7 loss to Brown and a 22-6 loss to host school #11 San Diego State.
Michelle Kaplan had the majority of the Sunbird's goals, with six. Brittney Guerrero, Jenn Wolter and Nicolette Haley each had two goals on the day while Jamie Lugo and Jenna Morris had one apiece. Dani Mortimer posted 33 saves and Charissa Gurnea had 15.
In game one, versus Brown, FPU came out strong to take a 4-3 going into half.
In a repeat of the two team's last meeting, though, the Bears were able to regain the lead in the second half, outscoring the Sunbirds 3-1 in the third and matching them 2-2 in the fourth to take the 8-7 win.
"Brown is a solid team. They've been playing well all weekend and we knew it was going to be a close game," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We played really well, recognizing where the ball needed to go. We were disappointed with the loss, but happy with our level of play."
San Diego State controlled the Sunbird's second game of the day, using their experience and depth to pull away in the second half and take the 22-6 win.
"We represented the school really well against San Diego State, a great team," said Suhovy. "We had some great shots that just didn't go in the cage. The coaching staff is really happy with how we played."
The tournament continues tomorrow as Fresno Pacific takes on two more top-of-the-line opponents, Arizona State and UC San Diego.
