Sunbirds take out La Verne, fall at CBU

The Sunbirds finished out the Lancer Invitational in Riverside on Saturday, beating La Verne 11-8 and losing a hard-fought game to Cal Baptist 13-8.

Scoring efforts were led by Katie Rayner, who scored six goals against La Verne. Brittney Guerrero and Michelle Kaplan each had three against CBU, Kaplan's all coming in the fourth quarter. Jaimie Lugo and Melissa Perry had two goals apiece while Jenn Wolter, Nicolette Haley and Jennifer Cobb all had one.

Dani Mortimer posted 25 saves on the day. She had a great weekend, averaging 12.75 saves per game.

Fresno Pacific controlled the game against La Verne, going up 6-2 at half. The Leopards outscored the Sunbirds 4-3 in the third quarter, but FPU quickly stifled any hope of a comeback, matching La Verne's effort in the fourth quarter to take the 11-8 win.

"It was a good win for us," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We almost let them back into the game in the third quarter, but the girls wouldn't have it. We sealed the deal and came away with the win."

Against Cal Baptist, a team on the verge of entering the NCAA top-20, Fresno Pacific played well, going into half down two goals at 6-4. The Lancers would pull away in the second half, though, taking the victory.

"They had a little more depth than us and kind of chipped away at us slowly," said Suhovy. "We were with them until the third quarter though. We played aggressive...never gave up."

"I felt really good about today," added Cobb. "We worked really hard and although we lost, we kept our heads in the game the whole time."

FPU will come back to Fresno for a home game against a ranked UC Davis team on March 25.
