Fresno Pacific led 8-4 in the third quarter but Harvard closed the gap quickly and came away with an 11-9 win over the Sunbirds in Davis on Monday. The Sunbirds would fall to NCAA #15 UC Davis 13-2 later in the day.
Nicolette Haley had three goals on the day, followed by Brittney Guerrero and Katie Rayner, each with two. Jenn Wolter and Michelle Kaplan added a goal apiece. Dani Mortimer had 25 saves.
In the first match of the day against Harvard, Fresno Pacific came out strong, going up 3-2 after the first quarter and 6-4 after the second.
The Sunbirds let the Crimson back into the game in the second half, though, as the game was tied at 9 after the third. Harvard went on to outscore FPU 2-0 in the final quarter to take the 11-9 win.
"We came out strong in the first half," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We got up and then Harvard came back with a vengeance in the second half. It caught us off guard a little bit and we had a hard time catching back up. Harvard's a solid team."
UC Davis controlled the Sunbird's second game. FPU was able to score twice, once in the second and third quarters, but the Aggies took the win.
"It was a great opportunity for us to gain experience," said Suhovy. "We played hard the whole game, but they're a top team."
The Sunbirds will travel to Riverside to compete in the Lancer Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
